About SC26

Come find us at booth #1704

We’re heading to Chicago for SC26, and we’d love to see you. Stop by booth #1704 to meet people who work on AlmaLinux, tell us what you’re running on your clusters, and ask us anything. The exhibit hall opens with the Grand Opening Gala on Monday, November 16 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, and then runs Tuesday and Wednesday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and Thursday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Who you'll meet

Four of us are heading to Chicago, so come say hi to whoever’s at the booth when you stop by. (ALESCo is the AlmaLinux Engineering Steering Committee, and a SIG is one of our Special Interest Groups.)

The Certification Station

Bring your laptop to booth #1704 and certify it with us. Most laptops certify in under 10 minutes, and the suite walks you through every step.

After review, your laptop is listed in the AlmaLinux Certification Catalog, so the next person who wants to run AlmaLinux on the same hardware knows it works.

On a Mac? You can still help: confirm the software you rely on in the catalog instead.

  1. Boot your laptop from our AlmaLinux live USB.
  2. Run alma-certify, and it walks you through the rest.
  3. Scan the code it shows you, approve your results, and submit.

Certify from anywhere

You don’t have to be in Chicago to help. Community validation is a real part of how the catalog works: when a community member certifies a machine, they run the same suite that we and the hardware vendors run, and every result adds to the confidence in a listing. The more of us that prove something works, the better!

Certify your hardware

Boot AlmaLinux live media on the machine, run dnf install alma-certify to get the suite from the extras repository, then run alma-certify.

Confirm your software

If you rely on a piece of software every day, sign in to the catalog and confirm that it works on the AlmaLinux release you run. If it works on a release its publisher hasn't listed yet, you can report that too!

Publishing the Repository Is the Easy Part: Taking Research Software Public

Research groups across the HPC (high performance computing) industry build universally useful software all the time, but most of it is never shared with the world. Open sourcing it can fix that, but publishing a project is much more than publishing the repository.

benny walks through the decision the way she walks through it with the many teams who ask her: finding your real motivation, whether your institution is on board, what long-term support you can honestly commit to, and what structure fits (an informal group, an umbrella foundation, fiscal sponsorship, or your own). Then she covers the practical side: getting the code ready, getting the project ready to receive feedback, getting yourself ready for contributors, and defining what success looks like before you need it. She'll post the slides and a checklist here afterward.

Get involved

AlmaLinux is built by the community, for the community, and there’s room for you whether you write code, test hardware, translate, or help other people find their way. Come by booth #1704 and tell us what you’re interested in, and we’ll point you in the right direction!

Find your SIG

Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are the easiest way to get involved in any open source community. All of ours are listed on the wiki, with how to join their chat channels and when they meet.

Can't make it to Chicago?

We'll miss you, but you can still be part of it. We'll share benny's slides and the checklist from her talk here after the event, you can certify your own hardware from wherever you are, and the community is always around in chat and on the forums.
